Broken beaver dam causes flooding in town

NEW LEBANON — Neighbors along the town’s Main Street woke up early Thursday morning to a flooded roadway as water overflowed from the creek at the intersection of Pool Hill Road and flooded the small Columbia County town of 2,000 residents. The cause was a beaver dam that broke in Pittsfield State Forest in neighboring Berkshire County, Massachusetts. It released an estimated 65 million gallons of water from an 8- to10-acre lake that was 25 feet deep, sending the water 3 miles down a mountain and flooding the hamlet of Lebanon Springs, New Lebanon Town Supervisor Tistrya Houghtling said.
