STONINGTON — Police are warning residents about minks after they said someone was chased by them this week.

Stonington Police Capt. Todd Olson said a complaint was filed Wednesday morning about minks chasing someone. Minks were spotted in Stonington Borough Point, Olson said.

Olson said there used to be a mink farm in the area, so the issue isn’t new.

“People should use caution and stay away from them,” he said. “Minks look like pet ferret animals, but they are not friendly.”

Stonington Animal Control has notified the state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection, which is investigating, Olson said.

Trapping season for minks is Nov. 7 to Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 to March 15, according to DEEP.
